VISUAL INSPECTION SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a kind of special computer that is used to control machines or processes (Warnock 1988). The use of PLCs provide various facilities for manufacturing industries in conducting control of the process automation, reduce production costs and increase the amount and quality of products (Mary 2004). Always associated with PLC automatic control systems in industry. The main purpose of the use of PLC is to increase productivity, both to increase the amount of production, production quality and accuracy of production. In automated production systems, human work has been replaced by using the machine, either in part or in its entirety.
Definition PLC according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is a digital electronic equipment that uses memory and can be programmed to store the direction of a particular function, such as logic, sequence, timing, counting, and arithmetic to control a process (Wright 1999). Various studies have been done to combine PLC with a variety of other applications, such as by visual inspection systems and intelligent systems. Visual inspection system applications with PLC based automated control system has been used extensively in industry, such as electronic component production system, production of glass, producing print materials, the automotive industry, etc. (Prabuwono et al. 2006).
Before the automated system is applied, visual inspection systems in industry is mostly done manually by humans. Inspection by the human system has many weaknesses caused by many factors, such as operator fatigue, lack of motivation, experience, skills and others. To overcome this problem, the visual inspection systems in industry has been effectively replaced by an automated system (Kopardekar et al. 1993). This study examines the design and implementation of PLC-based visual inspection system that is integrated with the bottling system Modular Automation Production System (MAPS). MAPS is a miniature production to bottling process used for the purpose of research, training and learning. Visual inspection system is used to detect the bottle that does not conform to quality standards.

DESIGN SYSTEM
Things to note in this study are the hardware and software used. Hardware system that is built consists of:
1. Pentium 4-based PC computer.
2. Siemens PLC S7-200 CPU 226.
3. MAPS bottling system.
4. Camera Logitec Quick Cam Express.
5. Infrared sensors, magnetic, and retroreflective.
